I have to keep myself busy... my phone refuses to ring with 'the call' and so I'm trying to keep busy with happy thoughts like baby shopping!
#1: Tell me what type of baby carriers/wearers you use or preferred and which you would say to avoid? I know how old our baby is will determine a bit about this and we won't buy one until we have our referral and are planning our travel.
If she is 6+ months old (which is most likely) will the Hotslings work? I've looked at the Baby Hawks and they look good but what do I know, I never wore either of my other 2 children. Also, which if ANY carrier will be bearable in the heat of Vietnam - where I will likely use the carrier the most.
#2: I'm probably going to do the Playtex drop in bottle system ...it is what I used 'way back when' with both K & Chloe after they were finished with breast feeding. It was easy and I remember both my children had very little to no gas since you can squeeze all the air out before feeding with the liners. Are there any other bottle systems that are simple to use that are better and/or easier? Its' been a while so I thought I'd better ask.
#3: Diaper disposal units - are there any out there that you don't need an engineering degree in order to install the refill bags? I remember with Keaton we had the Original "Diaper Genie" and it never worked very well. My husband is a pretty smart man but he could not for the life of him install those refills. I was not much better at it I confess. By the time Chloe came along we'd given up and were continually trucking diapers out of the house and into the garage. I'd love to find something that works!!!

les.. Dn't know much about the carrier but I too used the playtex drop ins and loved um. On the diaper pail though I had a saftey first pail from Toy's R Us. They are around 30.00. It is nothing like the diaper genie and you can use regular bags if you want. It had no odour and we only had to change it about once a week when the boys were little. I have heard nightmare stories about the "genie". My suggestion is to get one of these. the only place i have seen them is toys r us though so unfortunately you won't be able to shop around for prices. So that's my 2 cents. :) Your call is coming!!
two words...DIAPER CHAMP!!
best diaper pail around. everyone i know ownes and LOVE it! we have used it with both girls and LOVE it! it is SO simple to use and you just use regular trash bags!
this is my #1 baby item suggestion for anyone who asks!
Here's my two cents. We love the Hotsling and use it more now that Teegen is older than when she was very small. The hip carry is great. We love the Playtex drop in system! And the Diaper Champ is a must have. It uses regular trash bags and is super easy to use. I could not live without it! Can't wait to hear when your call comes!
Hey there! I can't believe you are finally so close to that baby of yours! Finally!
Anyways, I HIGHLY recommend the Beco baby carrier (we got ours online) for carrying a baby or toddler of any age. I can't imagine life without it - and Poppy has been home 6 months now and we still use it all the time. I've never used the Ergo, but I have seen them and they look almost identical to the Beco (as far as comfort). But just a heads-up, it's definitely not comfortable in heat. There were plenty of times that I thought I was going to melt with Poppy on my back (or front). I would also suggest getting something that the hubby wouldn't mind wearing. Ours was great for attachment between Marc and Poppy.
And for the diaper pails - we have both the Deco and the Safety First (both from Babies R Us). The Deco is kind of tricky to get the bags in, but we use that one for our cloth diapers, so we now have a cloth liner that goes in the wash with the diapers. And then recently we bought the Safety First one for the rare occasion that she wears a disposable diaper. That one is super easy to use and only requires regular garbage bags. Hope that helps!
Fingers crossed for that call!
I want to use the drop-in system too, but have heard it may be up to the babies... Some children adopted internationally refuse to drink from anything but the bottles they are used to. So don't buy too much until you know how stubborn she is!
Here are my thoughts....not from personal experience but after talking to many, many friends and researching online.
1. I chose to go with the BabyHawk (based on many suggestions from friends including my cousin who still carries her toddler in it.) I'd recommend making a pot of coffee and pulling a chair up to www.thebabywearer.com. Hundreds of options for carriers and thousands of reviews!! By far the very best site out there for any/all questions about carriers. If you register you can also view their forumns where adoptive parents share their experiences and might answer some of your questions.
2. Like you, going with Playtex Drop-ins.
3. Diaper Champ for sure!! Takes normal grocery bags, super easy to use, not smelly. Again, many friends use these and they have come highly recommended.
My carrier recommendation is www.hugofjoy.com. It's a super comfortable, light weight, thin and stretchy material (which means it's not hot, which I found my cotton pouch sling was, and it doesn't dig into me or my baby like my thicker pouch sling did). You can use it for swimming too, which I'm looking forward to trying this weekend. It takes up less room than a receiving blanket in my diaper bag, so it's always there in case I need it. I love it, it's been a great investment for me so far!
I'll add my 2 cents... In VN, I carried Ella in a baby bjorn. I know of others who use the mei tei one and loved that...they are similar. Ella was already 18 lbs in VN and she was starting to get too big for it I think. Her legs were hanging down pretty low and we stopped using it shortly after coming home with her. If your princess is smaller, it would work great. Yes, they are hot to wear (I wore it because Ed would over heat), but good because you don't need to wear her on your hip and get thrown off balance while walking around...because you'll do a LOT of walking there. I do like a hotsling type one for around here for shorter periods of time. I use it in the house and even if we go to the grocery store or farmer's market etc. Most of the hotsling-type ones are rated for up to 35lbs. If you sew, you can download free patterns and make one SUPER EASY too.
We don't use a diaper pail...but did hear the diaper champ was the best.
Did use drop in's with Ella in VN and they were great. Because of her lip we switched to Born Free because the nipple fit her mouth better...and we love those too.
HAPPY SHOPPING!
We are going with the Ergo- I have heard such good things about it. We had the Bjorn and the Sling with Aislin and Declan.
We are going to do the Drop-Ins when we are in Ethiopia- not sure what we will use when we get back- haven't figured that out yet!
I *hate* diaper pails- can't stand the thought of having one in the baby room or in the house (they just all seem to get so stinky)! We are going to use gDiapers a lot, but when we use the disposable diapers, we are going to have biodegradable bags to toss them in and then put them directly in the trash outside.
Wish we were closer so we could go shopping for some baby stuff!!!!
